Salvation Army Regent Hall
SFL deliver stunning audio-visual installation for the Salvation Army at Regent Hall
Located on the intersection between London’s Oxford Street and Regent Street, Regent Hall is among the Salvation Army’s premier venues in the UK. The hall serves an active congregation of the local Corps. as well as doubling up as a prime location for musical, corporate and private events.
SFL were given a remit to develop the technical facilities in the main venue in order to better support the activities of the church congregation and develop the venue’s offering to commercial clients.
SFL’s installation focused on three key areas:
Video
At the heart of SFL’s video installation is stunning 3×3 video wall using Samsung LED screens.
Additional Panasonic screens are located around the venue for foldback and relay due to difficult sightlines from sections of the balcony.
The system is controlled from a Roland V-800HD multi-format video switcher, with an Extron DTP distribution system.
Inputs included Panasonic PTZ cameras and connections for computers at multiple locations both at the control desk and stage.
Acoustics
The venue presented a challenging acoustic, with a reverberation time in excess of 2.5s and specific problematic reflections from large, untreated surfaces. For a venue of this size the long reverberation time was deemed problematic, even for classical musical performance, and was particularly difficult for speech intelligibility and contemporary music performance.
SFL’s approach involved a mixture of acoustic panels and Sonaspray FC acoustic plaster treatment to reduce reverberation, and a wrap of FlutterFree panels around the stage to create a more diffuse sound field. The acoustic installation was designed to complement the aesthetics of the venue and integrate with the third-party lighting installation to provide a subtle but modern feel to the upgraded venue.
The final result achieved a reduced reverberation time of 1.7s, representing a healthy balance between the various requirements of the venue’s diverse portfolio of events.
Audio
SFL’s audio installation deploys two d&b audiotechnik Ti10L line arrays which provide a controlled, even coverage across the entire venue, with additional 4S and 8S fills covering the few hard-to-get spots. 27S cardioid subwoofers are hidden under the stage.
The GPIO functionality of d&b’s 10D installation amplifiers allowed SFL to create a simple and intuitive interface for the customer to mute/unmute fills in certain areas of the venue depending on the layout of different events.
